Standards-Based Portfolios

STEP 1: Preview the NETS portfolio template | the exemplary portfolio | early portfolio examples.

STEP 2: Download the Portfolio Template zip file: NETS Portfolio

STEP 3: Edit the Portfolio.
  1. Edit the Home page text. Open the portfolio folder and edit the portfolio/index.html file. Using a simple text editor (e.g. wordpad, notepad, textedit textwrangler) edit only within designated areas (e.g. ####START_NAME#### ... END_NAME). Open the home page with your browser and hit refresh to see the changes. As you edit, refresh your browser frequently to confirm changes. You will only need to know the line break tag <br> for this simple editing. Use 1 line breaks for a new line, 2 for a new paragraph. ( For more HTML tutorials see w3schools ).

  2. Edit the Home page graphic. Create a mosaic (140 X 680 pixels) jpg file named frontpage.jpg. REPLACE the frontpage.jpg in the portfolio/images folder with the mosaic file that you created.

  3. Edit the Biography and Philosophy pages. You will only make simple text changes here as in 3A. You will also create links to other websites or files.
STEP 4: Post your portfolio to the Web. ( more detail )
  1. Add KU web space service at accounts. Your address will look like this Call KU Information Tech if you have problems.

  2. Post your portfolio folder to your web space. Use a file transfer program (FTP) such as WinSCP for Windows or Cyberduck Mac. NOTE Your FTP program must be set to the "SFTP secure" setting. You must post the "portfolio" folder INSIDE the public.html folder on the server.

  3. Review your online portfolio. Open a browser and enter the URL address of your server space followed by "/porfolio." For example:

  4. BACKUP YOUR DATA. Allways start by first saving your most recently edited portfolio to your flash drive. Delete the oldest version of your portfoio from your server and rename the last posted version on the server as porfolioOLD.
STEP 5: Add Course Assignments.
  1. Name the course(s) by edtiing the portfolio/courses.html file.

  2. Name and place the assignement files in the approriate folder. For assignemnt 1. the file might be assign_1.pdf and will be placed inside the potfolio/courses/course_1/assign_1 folder.

  3. Edit the course assignment list potfolio/courses/course_1/index.html with assignment name and date and a link to the file or website.
    For example: 1. Research and Searching <a href="assign_1/assign_1.pdf">.pdf </a> - (posted: 02/22/2012).

  4. Backup you KU websie frequently using step 4 using the apprpriate backup procedures.
STEP 6: Enter Standard Staements and Evidence.
  1. Edit yor personal statement for standard 1 in the my_statement.html file inside the standards/st1/ folder.

  2. Add the evidence files that you have created (.pdf files, URLs ... ) inside the portfolio/standards/st1/ folder and links to the evidence on your portfolio/standards/st1/my_statement.html file.

  3. Create links to Websites that reflect your philosophy and are most useful for this standard in the portfolio/standards/st1/my_statement.html file.

  4. Complete Standards 2 - 5 by repeating steps 6A - 6C. You may use the same evidence for more than one standard.
